Below are shown the pinouts of different ethernet cabling. Ethernet connectors are of type "RJ45"; an eight (8) connector jack. The pins are numbered from one (1) to eight (8), left to right when looking at the top of the connector.
Crossover and Straight Through Pinouts
The table below describes the pinouts of both straight through and crossover Ethernet cables. Keep in mind that pinouts are described for botht the left and right side of the cable.
Straight Through Cabling Pinouts
Left Pin | Left Signal | Right Pin | Right Signal |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Tx+ | 1 | Rc+ |
2 | Tx- | 2 | Rc- |
3 | Rc+ | 3 | Tx+ |
4 | GND | 4 | GND |
5 | GND | 5 | GND |
6 | Rc- | 6 | Tx- |
7 | GND | 7 | GND |
8 | GND | 8 | GND |
Crossover Cabling Pinouts
Many times this cable type is not needed. Many devices now have intelligent switching to internally switch pins for proper connectivity
Left Pin | Left Signal | Right Pin | Right Signal |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Rx+ | 3 | Tx+ |
2 | Rc- | 6 | Tx- |
3 | Tx+ | 1 | Rc+ |
4 | GND | 4 | GND |
5 | GND | 5 | GND |
6 | Tx- | 2 | Rc- |
7 | GND | 7 | GND |
8 | GND | 8 | GND |
